Hoard of the Dragon Queen - More stuff that I've painted.

Here are some more pictures of the models and other bits that I have painted for the Hoard of the Dragon Queen campaign.

Tents painted and finished, these will be used for the Dragon Cultist camp.
The brown tents came out the best and these will be used for the Kobold and mercenaries camp and the red and blue tents will be for the cultists and Dragonkin.

Close up picture of the tents, I'm still not 100% happy with the colouring on the blue/purple tents so I might repaint these a later date.

Lizard men.
These have been painted in the base colours and then dipped. I'll add the fine detail and clean up the rest of the painting later.

Giant purple mushrooms.
I made these using milliput, but I still need to add detail to the bases and also matte varnish them

Blue Dragon from the D&D Icon range, I repainted this model and also dipped it in Army Builder Dark Tone. Once all of that was done I then added the fine detail and the flock and rock on the base

For the village of Greenest,

Monk model bought from eBay but I have re-based it and added some new fine detail and dipped.

Hoard of the Dragon Queen - Briefs emailed to players

The roll call for the Hoard of the Dragon Queen dungeon will be as follows.

For a number of weeks now the two of you have been travelling through the untamed wilderness to the East of Baldurs Gate known as the Greenfields.

You have heard that a band of marauding bandits have been pillaging and stealing from small towns and villages a few days travel from where you are. So you have decided to take some paid work escorting a caravan of supplies that is heading in the direction of a small town called Greenest. 

From here you will take your pay and then leave the caravan to hunt down these vicious marauders.

As well as hiring you two for this trip the caravan master has also hired the aid of a few other mercenaries, some of which you have started to strike up a friendship with. 

Amongst these mercenaries are a savage Human Warrior and a preening Elf Bard, the barbarian is quiet and seems to be troubled by something, you have noticed on a few occasions that he has woken abruptly around the camp fire as if some dream is bothering him. As for the elf, well his songs make the trekking through the day and cold nights pass quicker, but how will he fare in a dangerous situation?

The journey to Greenest will take several days and as Autumn turns to Winter you start to feel the icy chill of the North Winds bearing down on you, this seems unusual as you are so far South. Maybe this is a portent for cold and hard time to come?

Kaldoran  - Human Barbarian


​Days have turned to weeks and quickly this time has become months, but the anguish that you feel for the destruction of your village still burns deep inside your heart.

You have travelled a great distance from the North and every day has been a constant reminder of the life that was taken from you. Around every copse or hill is another thriving, rural town of village where families enjoy their lives and will hopefully never know the pain that you have witnessed.

Your travels have taken you from the edge of the Spine of the World mountains, across the great open spaces of Faerun and finally you have made your way South East to the open green lands that border onto the great city of Baldurs Gate.

This trek has been difficult but it has become harder recently as your nights have been disrupted by dreams that leave you cold and shaking in the night. Every fifth night for the past month you have been awoken by the same dream. The world destroyed by cold, choking fumes, lightning storms, waves of acid and horrible fire. Each time, the dream ends with ten evil eyes glaring at you from behind the darkness. ​

And as you wake from this dream you are always left with a name or word ringing in your ears. 


Through your travels you have learnt that Greenest is a small town that is several days journey East from Baldurs Gate, so you have taken some paid work as a caravan guard for a merchant who is heading in that direction.

As well as yourself the merchant has hired additional help in the form of two large Half Orc brothers. Both seem to have an affinity with nature and make good company around the camp fire. Also travelling with you is a small Elf Bard, you have not met many of the Fey Race before and this one appears to be obsessed with playing some sort of string instrument and singing loudly at all times of the day.

Leosin Erlanthar is a wandering monk who once saved your life.

You will never forget that night in the Druken Kraken Tavern, you'd had far too much to drink and that baudy tune about the Orc befouling the Kobold was probably not the right song to be singing in front of a group of Orc Barbarians.

They were not happy with your song but they were more that happy to slice you from gut to throat and they would have had Leosin not stepped in to save your skin. Whatever he did to fend off the Orcs is just a hazy blur and whether that was because of your drunken state or his prowess with weapons you are not sure.

However a number of days ago whilst you were working in a tavern in Baldurs Gate you learnt that Leosin had gone missing and that his last whereabouts was in a small town called Greenest that is located several days East from Baldurs Gate.

You decide to take some paid work escorting a merchant and his caravan of supplies who is heading to the same town. If Leosin has gone missing then this could be the perfect opportunity to repay that debt!

Travelling to Greenest is boring and cold and you long to be back in a packed, warm and friendly tavern entertaining the patrons and catching the eye of some local lass. At the moment your only travelling companions are two Half Orcs who seem to be obsessed with shrubs and animal dung and a Human Barbarian who rarely talks. 

However the Human is of some interest to you, you have noticed on a couple of nights that he seems to be talking in his sleep and you can make out certain words that are repeated every night. These words are kill, fire, death and vengeance.

Before you left your monastery Yung Sei Tei called you into his private meditation room and spoke the following words to you.

"Boy, your journey to enlightenment has only just begun and you have chosen to walk this path alone. I do not condone this path that you have taken but I need to tell you that the road you now walk along will be difficult and full of pain. Beware the ten eyed, purple demon, she walks amongst us in the shadows but her cursed talons will strike soon."

With that Yung Sei Tei falls into a deep meditative trance.

With a heavy heart and more questions than answers you leave the Monastery of the Open Hand and head out into the wild lands not only seeking your sworn enemies but also trying to understand who or what this ten eyed demon is and why her path intersects with yours.

For many weeks you travel though the open green lands of Faerun, every day you pass by another farm settlement or small village. All of which are alive with families happily going about their daily lives. You can't help but wonder would life be easier if you had chosen a more simpler life but you quickly put these thoughts out of your head, if you are not here to stand up against the evils of the world then who will. Through the power of your fist and the inner strength of your Ki you will show all of those who stand against the power of light that their cause is wrong.

Your travels soon lead you into a large area known as the Greenfields, this part of Southern Faerun is famous as a trading route between larger cities and also as a place where many villages and farmsteads are found, the night is drawing in and you are soon looking for shelter as the cold northern winds are chilling, you can feel that winter is on its way but the cold air seems to chill you through to your very soul this evening. As you make your way down a well worn but quiet road you soon see a road sign telling you that a town called Greenest is but a mere 1 mile from your current position. So you decide to head for this town and look for lodgings for the night.

Coming in January 2015 - Hoard of the Dragon Queen

Lost Mines of Phandelver - The End.

And so the final chapter in our first group foray into the world of D&D 5th Edition has come to an end, and what an end it was.

*****SPOILER ALERT*****.

There were Hobgoblins, Undead, Ankhegs, more Undead, Giant Mushrooms that stank and the final fight with Black Spider.

Here are some pictures of the epic dungeon that we played on Saturday, as you can see from the pictures our DM created a huge set piece dungeon from nothing more that a tonne of polystyrene, paint, sweat and love and what can I say apart from that it was amazing.

We started gaming at around 11am GMT on Saturday and we finally finished the dungeon 16 hours later on a early Sunday morning.

 And so we begin, everything looks nice and tidy at this point of the day.
Needless to say by the end of the dungeon and 16 hours later there were a lot more cups of coffee, food wrappers and tired gamers strewn about the place.

 As you can see the dungeon was made from a huge SLAB of polystyrene which was then crafted, ripped, punched into the required rooms, painted and then covered in a top of paper which was then painted black. As we searched each new room our able DM would peel back more of the dungeon "roof" so we could see what was going on.

 I believe this is a close up of a room filled to the rafters with Dwarven and Orc corpses, once we were in they spring to un-life and tried to beat us to death.

This could have been a nasty encounter if it wasn't for the use of a Mage Hand to set off the mushrooms spore attacks before we entered. However saying that, taking on the Ankheg wasn't much fun either, but after the fight the party did find a nice hidden surprise. 

The gaming table became more hectic as the day passed, you can see my PHB and character sheets at the bottom of the picture but more importantly you can see the size and scale of the dungeon. 

 It was very late by this point.....from what I can recall it might have been 1am on Sunday morning when I took this picture.
However I can't be sure as I was probably knocking back some seriously strong coffee and eating cold potato wedges.

This picture shows one of the last fights with the main Drowe protagonist and her henchmen who were a very tough Bugbear and Hobgoblin.

This is the entire board revealed....we actually searched every room possible..and we found the Forge of Spells. Plus we found the keys that opened the door and the password to get past the small Beholder.

Top centre - Mark and his PHB with dice and character sheet - he played the late and very sleepy Human fighter.

Left - Is our willing and able DM's left leg....Well done Phil...we all had a great time.

Top right - Donkey Daves green dice and spell cards, he was responsible for playing our Dwarven Fighter and Human Rogue.

Bottom Right  - My dice all lined up in correct numerical order and turned so that the highest number is always on top....this is a ritual I have been doing since I first played D&D about 23 years ago, (I know weird..!!), and you can also see my PHB and character sheets again. I played the Rock Gnome Wizard and the Green Dragon-Kin Cleric.

Lost Mines of Phandelver - Cragmaw Castle

So after we finished our chat with the friendly druid and stopped off to loot some of the buildings and have a fairly nerve racking conversation with a Green Dragon we made our way out into the wilderness in search of Cragmaw Castle.

On the way to the Castle we made a brief stop off to have words with a Troll and a goblin who the Troll was intending on eating. Then made all haste to the castle with only one small diversion that came in the shape of a large Owlbear.

Once again our DM has excelled himself in the set piece work he built for the castle, so posted below are some pictures.

Cragmaw Castle.
This was made by our DM, Phil, who constructed the castle and base from polystyrene. He then overlaid the top with paper so when we entered new rooms he could simply tear off the paper and reveal what the new area/room looked like.

If you zoom into the top of the picture you can just see the party "stealthily" approaching the castle.

Roll call is as follows.
Blonde haired rogue on the left is Randall
Red robed chap on the right is Gilson Heath the mage.
Blonde haired female dwarf in the blue dress carrying the axe is Amber.
Just in front of Gilson on the right is the Green Dragonborn Cleric called Jade Dragon.
At the front of the party in the white/red tabard and fancy head dress is the human warrior Haskell
And just out of sight hiding behind a gold and blue shield is Argentum the White Dragonborn Paladin.

From this picture you can made out the first area into Cragmaw and some rooms leading out, the detail of the model was excellent.

Lost Mines of Phandelver - Thunder Tree Village

So me and my gaming friends got together again at the weekend to play the next part of the D&D adventure Lost Mines of Phandelver.

Here are some photos taken by myself and one of the other players.

The first set of pictures show the village of Thunder Tree, we travelled here to find a druid who we hoped would help us find Cragmaw Castle.

Outside of the druids tavern, we had a big fight with a horde of Ash Zombies and the druid got out some popcorn and watched the battle.

Green Dragon lair....not quite big enough for his liking so he might be moving home soon.

Awesome Ettercap that we fought, this was made by the DM and scared the hell out of party.

D&D Icons of the Realms

Stuff I've been painted.

I posted some pictures of these miniatures earlier on the blog, but here are the finished versions. I've dipped these in Army Builder dark tone, then matte varnished them and finally added the detail to the bases.

I think the added detail really adds to these models and once me and my gaming buddies are finished with the D&D 5th edition Starter Set adventure then I'll be using these in the Horde of the Dragon Queen. 

I've read episodes 1-3 and I'll hopefully crack on with the rest this week.....I just need to find some spare time in between work, commuting to London, kids, family, eating, sleeping, painting e.t.c. e.t.c...!

He took a bit of a beating from the goblins but Jade Dragon managed to save him using the Spare the Dying spell.
